Leroy Maloy, longtime packer, describes the camps from a user’s perspective:

I started packing in 1948 with my dad. We would start packing June fifteenth and quit the middle of November. We took a minimum of forty-two head of stock. It would be my dad, five packers, a cook, and a flunkie. The shortest trip would be two weeks. The longest would be a month. We would resupply every two weeks. You would go in and never come out. It was beautiful. We had complete kitchens with the canvas back chairs and roll-up tables. The cook and us packers would serve, and usually it would be fourteen to seventeen people. The dunnage guy would have five mules just for dunnage, and he would go to each of their places and rake out a spot, roll out their beds, and blow up their mattresses. Every other day we would have a layover so the party could fish and the stock could rest and we would shoe the horses.
